Colombia Free Trade Agreement
MFTC is currently working to defeat passage of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, yet another NAFTA-expansion.
The Colombia FTA was negotiated and signed in November 2006 and was submitted to the U.S. Congress for approval in April of 2008.
After it was submitted, the Congress voted to change the rules and remove the "fast track" timeline that would have forced a vote. Now there is no timeline for an up or down vote on the agreement. Theoretically, it could happen any day.
Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world to be a union organizer. Since 1986, over 2500 union leaders have been murdered. Already this year, 25 have been murdered. These murders keep workers in fear of organizing for their rights.
Additionally, this trade deal has all of the same flawed investor state rights and agriculture policies as NAFTA and CAFTA.
NAFTA=BAD
CAFTA=WORSE
COLOMBIA FTA=DEADLY.
